Competencies for On-the-Job Trainers

TeamOJT Tip of the Month for August, 2008

Typical competencies for on-the-job trainers include the following:

  1. Gives effective feedback
  2. Uses effective coaching strategies
  3. Is flexible in adapting to the needs of trainees with different backgrounds, skills, and abilities, and with different behavioral and learning styles
  4. Demonstrates skill in verbal and nonverbal communication
  5. Demonstrates skill in organizational and time management
  6. Has credibility with peers as a result of expertise and professionalism
  7. Is able to conduct team job task analyses, write observable and measurable performance objectives, and prepare effective training modules
  8. Shows skill in evaluating trainee performance
  9. Possesses hands-on experience performing all tasks to be taught.
