Training One-on-One: Five Easy Steps

- Trainer and Trainee Establish a Shared Mental Model
- Develop rapport with the trainee.
- Identify the task to be learned
- Check prior skills, knowledge, and experience of the trainee.
- Encourage questions
- Trainer Demonstrates a Task as Trainee Observes
- Preview the task - explain the purpose of the task, why the task is important, and how it relates to the entire job.
- Position the trainee to observe - to the side or slightly behind you.
- Talk through the steps of the task.
- Talk through the steps of the task while performing the task.
- Summarize what you did.
- Ask for questions.
- Trainer Coaches Trainee During Performance of the Task
- Ask the trainee to preview the task (purpose, why important, and how it relates to the big picture). Coach when necessary.
- Ask the trainee to talk through the steps of the task. Coach when necessary.
- Ask the trainee to talk through the steps while performing the task. Coach when necessary.
- Ask the trainee to summarize the task. Coach when necessary.
- Ask for questions.
- Trainer Observes Trainee Perform Task and Gives Feedback.
- Ask the trainee if he/she is ready to perform the task.
- Ask the trainee to state safety precautions and quality requirements (if applicable).
- Ask the trainee to preview the task.
- Ask the trainee to talk through the task.
- Ask the trainee to talk through the task while performing the task.
- Ask the trainee to assess the performance.
- Give feedback - specific, and encouraging (not critical).
- Trainer and Trainee Debrief.
- Summarize the task.
- Ask for questions.
- Review the performance objective of the task - how well the task must be performed for the evaluation and under what conditions the task must be performed for the evaluation.
- Ask the trainee if he/she is ready to be evaluated.
- Schedule evaluation (if trainee is ready); or schedule additional practice time.
- Tell the trainee where to get help if needed.
- Tell the trainee that you will do follow-up training on the task.
